At last,we've had some sun and good clear skies that have kicked the fish back into season,I've been down to the canal and ajoining river a lot but without a bite.Today was perfect so after work I trotted down with my fishing mate,7 year old Carl and gave the canal and river a shot.Plenty of takes by small fish but 2 good results by these 2.The perch from the canal and the Sik,which I have no idea what it is in English, from the river, but can tell you in Latin, lol.Must say the Sik was a beautiful looking fish with a nice pull on the bigger rod, coming in at approx 25cm in length. Not sure wy the picture makes it look small though.
The Nanofil is great but any snags it seems to fray,I presume thats due to the way its made.Sensitive yes, fantastic for city fishing.

Well,I'm afraid the weather has turned cold again since our last outing to the canal.I've tried a couple of times but it was bitterly cold and nothing going on at all.I just hope the sun heats the water up and kick starts them.Never the less,I'll keep trying, and obviously let you know what's happening. In the mean time I'll try and post some pictures of the area's I'll be fishing.

Thursday 5 April 2012

Sorry for no updates but this time of year its pretty quiet over here unless you enjoy cold windy weather, afraid I don't but we've managed to get through. Its been a strange couple of months, the ice melts from the river and canal then freezes again unexpectedly.Anyway fishing, spent lots more on tackle and a new tackle bag,Savage Gear Pro Roadrunner Gear Bag .Love it!Perfect for me and my needs for local fishing in a city.So this week with high temperatures and low winds I've been out with the UL kit.It has been a great learning pattern with various shaped jig heads,to be honest never expecting to catch a thing as water levels over here are low equalling the UK levels.

So yesterday,Wednesday the weather was great, nothing at work and my 7 year old who "assists" me has gone through a bad cold and just needed fresh air.So i took him down to the river,20 mins later, left handed he's casting like a pro.UL rod, 0.5 to 5g rod,2.5 g jighead and nanofil line.....hmm thank God he did'nt catch...but I did ;) a nice 33cm sea trout! And did that outfit perform...fantastic.....all on a panic minnow
from AGM.what a result......weather here has deteriated again for the Easter weekend,but I'm determined...thermals and waterproofs here I come...have a good Easter everyone..tight lines.

A little extra,I'm also kitting up my other rod 5 to 25g, my old mate Colin is bringing me back another delivery,no not cream eggs ;) but lures so I'll photo them and up load this week. These lures are for the lake and stream fishing,I've never caught a pike and this year I'm determined.
This afternoon I decided to test the rod armed with nanofil and a 2oz lead, just to get adjusted to this type of fishing. What hit me most was the casting distance, totally gob smacked! No effort at all the rod, reel and Nanofil casted further than I truely expected, biggest problem...eye sight lol damn trying to hook up was hard work but thats no fault of the equipment just my eyesight, too many hours and years manually drawing and now using CAD really screws your eyes,Age no...nothing to do with it..lol,Anyway I was extremely happy with the performance of everything,so now I need the water to heat up by 2C and hopefully fish on.The surface ice broke away last week so obviously its still cold, what is interesting is that back in Shoreham thefirst mackeral was bagged, that is early, and the long nose silver trapeze artists, garfish are appearing as well..looks like we are on for a good year folks, fingers crossed and tight lines...by the way, those that don't de-barb,unless you are fishing for the final result in the kitchen why not,it's easier to de-hook as well...and if you fish properly, its not a problem ;)

ULF Goodies

So here are a couple of pictures of my " goodie" bag,I work with a good friend Colin who commutes between Sweden and England,Bournemouth actually but its not an easy trip, especially arriving in the UK,LHR and then coaching it to Bournemouth.Anyway Colin brings back all sorts for me,kids clothing, books and obviously fishing tackle and magazines, etc, etc.Colin gets a few calls from his wife, regarding plastic fish, plastic worms in fluid, fishing hooks with weights on the end being posted through the front door or needing to be picked up from a sorting office, did I mention Scalextrics as well ;)...try explain all these packages to your wife, working away from home and having no interest in fishing except for a mate living in Sweden,if you read this Caroline its all cosher, promise:)

The goodie bag..................

Drop shot fishing has so many mixed opinions, understandably depending where you fish, but personally over here in Sweden I believe it'll suit me as the majority of good waters here are extremely weedy...but the fish held in these areas are superb. So now I'm thinking of loading my other purchase the Thunderstick with drop shot tackle for those special occasions.....I'll carry this topic on in a couple of weeks, with a shopping list..
In my last post I recommended the guys at the artoffishing shop, but I really do think I need to make a special thanyou and highly recommend the staff at fishermanstacklecompany .My wife bought me the Soniks 3 wading kit for Christmas, knowing that I really wanted something to tackle the numerous streams, rivers and lakes here in Sweden. And there are numerous surrounding her families summer house, although not guarenteed fishable or containing any fish anyway.Bless her she checked out my clothing size and realised watching football and drinking beer was'nt helping my figure...lol.So she ordered XL,that what it says on some jumpers ;)
As many of you know this is not comparable when ordering waders, sizing to your wardrobe. So after a phone call to fisher mans tackle ,packing waders and boots and paying £40 shipping back to the UK they sent me the correct size of waders and boots post free!! Now thats what I call service,so if you guys are ever read this thank-you!And if you are in shopping there you go.......
Picked up my Rapala Sling bag Ltd today, feels great although I do think Rapala would benefit by producing a single box edition instead of the double.Concept is great but being someone who likes to travel light whilst fishing the Sling Bag provokes you to fill both compartments totally needlessly with tackle that you will never use. However the design and comfort is superb,so I'm looking forward to using it.Minus the secondary storage box.At this point I must say art of fishing produced a reasonable price but superb shipping costs to me in Sweden and to be honest it arrived quicker than most UK post addressed from other companies! I think that could be another topic on this blog.........

Sunday 12 February 2012

Just a quick foot note, the top ring of the rod must be about 2mm diameter,so after purchasing the Nanofil,it felt I had made the right choice giving the diameter of the Nanofil seems so small compared to the breaking strain.I'm by no way a profesional angler,so a lot of my choice is hit and miss,I guess like many of us ;)
Anyway the rod and reel......
Ok so I'll start with the 2 main keys of my ultra light kit,the rod and reel.Being naive and lack of some serious money to be able to buy anything Japanese,as we all do I read forum after forum, made a list or several..Anyway one of the rods I particularly fell for was from Savage, good reports and a reasonable price.I was also looking for my other rod,5g to 20g region and had narrowed it down again to another Savage or Cormoran Thunder stick.
Living in Sweden is frustrating,as most fishing is fly rod, therefore try to locate a rod was becoming harder by selection.Anyway, due to work I've been working Saturdays,I'd managed to wrap up early one Saturday and on the way home dropped into my local tackle shop,as you do;) I had'nt realised they had a sale on so was pleasantly surprised, especially when I saw the thunder stick plus sitting beside it was a Cormoran Carb-O-Star UL.1.80m casting 0.5 to 4 g.After asking the sales assistant why he had'nt bagged it up yet,he then presented the bill..
£70 for both rods!! A bargain in my mind!!
Monday was a mission,a reel.On one of the many forums I follow was also a link for reels to match the UL rod...one caught my eye,for the Mitchell Mag-Pro 1000.
And it was reduced from £99 to £ 50....so that was in the basket as well!
At the same time I've been reading mixed reviews regarding the Nanofil line,I liked the idea of being able to cast further, especially using 4g lures. So again surfing I found what I wanted for half price, just under £18.Result.
Next has to be the whats in the bag...or what you would like to see in the fishes mouth.....

Thursday 9 February 2012

Hi all,and welcome. This is my blog on fishing, obviously, but I'm starting two new quests this year, firstly I'm going to try ultra-light fishing.Previously I've always preferred sea angling but living in the centre of Gothenborg I'm also surrounded by the sea, fresh water canals, lakes and rivers.Considering I'm a Brighton boy living on Shoreham beach this is a new adventure. But not only is it due to the fact of living close to so many various water bodies that I have decided to try this method but the fact that bass fishing here does not happen.More of that later.
My other task is to see how many various types of fish, big and small I can catch in 12 months. That is a mission as many of you are aware that work always seems to pop up in your plans! Anyway,I'll try and keep this intro simple.Over the next 2 weeks I will explain my purchases, take photos of my kit,and run through various ideas that I'd love to hear comments, good or bad.I'll also be after advice from anybody wishing to share.
To start with though I will concerntrate on Ultra light fishing..the minimum.
